SURF CONDITIONS
Ahangama Surf House is located in a prime surf spot on the south coast of Sri Lanka and is open from October to May.
South coast : October - may
From October to May, the south coast of Sri Lanka offers some of the most consistent and enjoyable surf conditions on the island. Around Ahangama, there’s a mix of mellow beach breaks and small reefs that work well throughout the season. Early and late in the season (around October–November and April–May), swells tend to have more energy leading to stronger and bigger waves. December through March often bring clean, glassy mornings with smaller but well-shaped waves.
Kabalana sits right in the middle of a stretch of coast from Hikkaduwa to Matara, with Ahangama and Midigama just a few minutes down the road, and Weligama around 15–20 minutes away by tuk-tuk. Each area has its own setup — from fun, forgiving waves for beginners to more defined reef breaks when the swell fills in. The water is warm throughout the season, winds are usually light in the mornings, and there’s almost always a spot picking up the right amount of swell somewhere along this coast.

East coast : June - September
When the southwest monsoon hits around May, most surfers shift their focus to the east coast. The winds switch direction, and the long right-hand points around Arugam Bay start to come alive. The season there runs roughly from May to October, with the most consistent surf from June to September. While the south coast quiets down with onshore winds and smaller swells, the east coast lights up with long, open walls and dry, offshore mornings.
